Top 5 Books Artists need to read

In this post, I wanted to share the Top 5 books that I highly recommend! These are targeted to artists and illustrators who want to make it on their own working from home as a freelancer or an entrepreneur. I've especially love Audio Books too and all the ones I mention are on Audible, which is the app that I use. I love listening to them on my morning walks, when I am drawing or sometimes when I fall asleep at night.

Even though Audio ones are easy to listen to whilst doing other things, I do want to get more actual books. I just bought one the other day from Kmart called 'The Power of Now' by Eckhart Tolle.

So here are the 5 books I recommend...

1. Find your Artistic Voice by Lisa Congden

Identify and nurture your own visual identities and push through fear and insecurity, and appreciate the value of their unique personal journeys.

Lisa was one of the first Artists I found in the beginning of my journey. I found her on Skillshare and then bought one of her courses on Creative Live which was so inspiring. I still remember that exciting feeling as I watched and learned because it was the start of a whole new world for me! This book on finding your artistic voice really helped me get out of a funk I was going through just before Christmas. I was feeling so overwhelmed and frustrated with my art but this book helped get me out of my head and it was so inspiring to listen too!

2. Art Inc. by Lisa Congden

Practical guidance on turning your art into a profitable business, with real-world insights from the pros.

Another good book from Lisa to help you get started as a artist. She has packed it full of everything an artist needs to know moving forward in your journey. I think this was the first Art book I read and I found it really interesting.

3. Art, Money, Success by Maria Brophy

Maria tells personal stories of her own business deals, successes and failures, while sharing non-conventional wisdom that will explode your art sales.

Such an amazing book filled with all the knowledge and important things to know running a business as a freelance artist. It is packed with so much value and would definitely need to read this one again!

4. Your Dream Life starts here by Kristina Karlsson

This audiobook is filled with powerful ideas and simple proven tools that will help you transform your wishes into dreams, and then into an achievable roadmap for creating your dream life - a life designed by you for you, and for your loved ones.

This one was so inspiring and just the word 'Dream Life' makes me so excited! :) It helped kick start my days as I would listen to it on my morning walks. Such an inspiring women and even though it's not completely targeted to Artists, it can still be useful and it's so good if you do want to make a business from your creative passion.

5. She Means Business by Carrie Green

If you're a creative and ambitious female entrepreneur or are contemplating the entrepreneurial path, this book will provide the honest, realistic, and practical tools you need to follow your heart and bring your vision to life.

I listened to this on Audible just over a year ago and I remember feeling so inspired from it. This was when I had my full time job here in Australia and I used to soak up all the motivation on my long bus journeys to and from work! I was watching her YouTube channel too! :)

So these are all books I have read/listened too and highly recommend! I would read all of these again and if I had to pick a favourite, it is so hard...but I do feel that Maria's book, Art Money Success really gave me a lot of helpful value and insights to being your own boss as an artist!

Have you read any of these? Which one stands out to you the most?
